Career Resources - Interviewing Tips

  1. Be on time. Rule #1. If you show up late for an interview, you should just turn around and go back home. You just lost the job!
  2. Dress appropriately. Never wear too much jewelry, perfume or make-up. All three are a turn-off. Business casual is usually acceptable. A business suit is not always necessary.
  3. Bring all necessary past employment information for the application, and fill out the application completely. Bring a resume if required.
  4. Speak clearly. Look the interviewer in the eye when answering or asking questions.
  5. Be prepared to tell the interviewer why you left previous employers. Never speak badly about a previous employer.
  6. Be honest! A lie will eventually catch up with you, and if you got the job initially, you may very well be fired in the end.
  7. Make sure you know your strengths and weaknesses pertaining to work, and be prepared to explain. Interviewers always ask these questions.
  8. Research the company with which you are interviewing. Interviewers are always impressed when you come to the interview with knowledge of the company and job for which you are applying. This can be done on the internet or at your local library.
  9. Ask questions about the job, the company, etc…It shows that you are really interested in the job. Be positive!
  10. Provide a complete list of references.  This can be done on the application and as an attachment to your resume.
  11. Finally, thank the interviewer for his/her time and send a follow-up note or thank you email.
