Patient Financial Counselor Manager

The Patient Financial Counseling Manager oversees the daily operations and supervision of employees within the Financial Counseling department. The Manager is responsible for developing and enforcing policies and procedures, managing overall training and coordination of work for the department, monitoring team performance, and ensuring that proper patient experience protocols are followed. The Manager interfaces directly with senior leadership to uphold the strategic direction of the organization and to champion transformational change within engagement teams and the overall organization. All tasks related to this position are to be done in a manner consistent with VBO policies, procedures, quality standards, customer needs, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Build solid and collaborative relationships with team members, foster a productive team-oriented environment, leverage diverse views to encourage innovation and help develop and grow team members throughout the course of every engagement by providing timely and meaningful feedback
  • Communicate with external clients and internal staff in an organized and knowledgeable manner
  • Leverage project management skills, especially with leading and facilitating teams
  • Serve as the knowledge expert and information resource for staff
  • Provide performance improvements and coaching to staff
  • Conduct timely training assessments and performance reviews
  • Monitor adherence to policies and established procedures within the department and propose procedural methods that assure effective execution of department expectations
  • Conduct regular audits and quality control of staff to ensure procedural compliance
  • Ensure patient experience and service standards are met
  • Handle escalated patient issues and resolve issues to meet department standards and patient satisfaction
  • Work collaboratively with various hospital departments on issues relating to patient estimates, financial assistance programs, and financial counseling
  • Represent the department in meetings and on committees relating to changes or issues needing resolution
  • Gather and analyze departmental and program specific productivity and quality of service statistics to report to direct leadership and leadership within other departments
  • Responsible for working departmental reports as assigned
  • Manage resource requirements, project workflow, budgets, and status updates
  • Manage and conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of large and complex data
  • Examine feasibility of activities from short and long term perspective
  • Utilize appropriate reports to contact insurance payers for resolution to accounts that are pending, denied or in the appeal process
  • Explain insurance benefits and collects co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay portions due
  • Collect outstanding balances due from previous accounts or establishes payment arrangements for these balances as appropriate
  • Provide complete resolution to patients billing issues and questions
  • Document authorization and benefit information in registration system
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations
  • Exhibit thorough knowledge in the use of all registration and scheduling systems, electronic verification tools and Web based resources
  • Meet federal, state, and hospital requirements related to compliance issues
  • Adhere to VBO company policies and procedure in conjunction to client policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
