Patient Financial Counselor Supervisor

The Patient Financial Counseling Supervisor oversees the daily operations and supervision of employees within the Financial Counseling department. The supervisor is responsible for developing and enforcing policies and procedures, managing overall training and coordination of work for the department, monitoring team performance, and ensuring that proper patient experience protocols are followed.


  • Serve as the knowledge expert and information resource for staff
  • Provide performance improvements and coaching to staff in a timely manner
  • Conduct timely training assessments and performance reviews
  • Monitor adherence to policies and established procedures within the department and propose procedural methods that assure effective execution of department expectations
  • Ensure patient experience and service standards are met
  • Conduct regular audits and quality control of staff to ensure procedural compliance
  • Handle escalated patient issues and resolve them in a manner that meets department standards for patient satisfaction
  • Gather and analyze departmental and program-specific productivity and quality of service statistics to report to direct leadership and leadership within other departments; work departmental reports as assigned
  • Explain necessary forms and obtain signatures from patient/guarantor
  • Contact appropriate payers, verifying benefits and obtaining necessary authorizations
  • Utilize reports to contact insurance payers for resolution to accounts that are pending, denied or in the appeal process
  • Go over insurance benefits and collects co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay portions due
  • Collect outstanding balances due from previous accounts or establishes payment arrangements for these balances as appropriate
  • Provide complete resolution to patients billing issues and questions
  • Contact Primary Care or Admitting Physician to obtain authorizations, diagnosis, and procedure detail as necessary
  • Document authorization and benefit information in registration system
  • Assemble patient record and obtains copies of relevant documents including insurance cards, photo identification cards and any advance directives
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations
  • Exhibits thorough knowledge in the use of all registration and scheduling systems, electronic verification tools and Web based resources
  • Work collaboratively with various hospital departments on issues relating to patient estimates, financial assistance programs, and financial counseling
  • Represent the department professionally in meetings and on committees relating to changes or issues needing resolution
  • Meet federal, state, and hospital requirements related to compliance issues
  • Adhere to VBO company policies and procedure in conjunction to client policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
