5 Common Mistakes Made in an Interview

Interview Advice

While everyone knows the common things to do before an interview like showing up 15 minutes early and dressing professional, there are several common mistakes that people make in the interview process that can hurt you when trying to get the job.

  1. Not turning your cell phone off before you walk in the building. Remember, as soon as you walk through the doors of the staffing agency or the company that you are interviewing at, you are in the spotlight. Do not check your phone while you are in the lobby. It’s best to make sure you keep your phone off at all times. Even if you’re phone is on silent, you don’t want your phone to start buzzing in the middle of your interview. It will distract both you and the person conducting the interview.
  2. Interrupting the interviewer. Although you may think you are coming across as eager – you definitely want the interviewer to have full control of the interview and you want to allow them to get through their questions before you chime in. This is also a sign of respect.
  3. Not bringing resumes. Even though you have sent your resume over email and even online, never assume that the interviewer has your resume. Always bring several copies with you. After all, you are the one that needs the job – not the person interviewing you.
  4. Not asking questions after the interview. Once the interviewer asks you if you have any questions, always think of at least one question. This demonstrates that you are interested in the job and the company. It also allows you to interview the company to see if this opportunity is right for you.
  5. Not following up. After your interview ends, always follow up with a hand-written note or an email thanking the interviewer for taking the time out of their busy schedule to meet with you.  This will also help leave a positive and memorable impression! But after you’ve followed up one time, wait for them to reach back out to you. You don’t want to appear too eager and you certainly don’t want to annoy or bother the interviewer.

Remember, your interview is your first impression. Just because you got the interview, does not mean you have the job. You want to leave the best impression you can whether you are meeting with a staffing agency or with your new prospective employer.
